Grammar: cuánto and how many

Four rules that cover almost every question with it.

It matches the noun

cuánto dinero, cuánta agua, cuántos gatos, cuántas camisas. The plural forms mean "how many".

Before a verb, use cuánto

With no noun after it, use the base form: ¿Cuánto es? ¿Cuánto cuesta?

Hay for how many there are

¿Cuántas habitaciones hay? How many rooms are there? The noun comes first, then hay.

Keep the accent

Questions take cuánto, also inside a sentence: No sé cuánto cuesta. Without the accent, cuanto is a different word, as in en cuanto.

Right before a verb, cuánto doesn't change.
